Arrival in Chile

Finally arrived in Chile! Seemed like the day would never come, but the last week was over in a flash and just all too quick. Not too many tears at the airport, mostly because I was there by myself...

The travel from Perth was long, but I managed to sleep at least 50% of each stage, so that worked out well and was therefore not too tired this morning on arrival, but am feeling quite weary tonight. Business class is not too tough, the food excellent (vegetarian special meals are recommended) and the fold-flat beds just excellent.

I've spent the afternoon wandering the streets of Santiago - visited the Triumph (motorcycle) shop and a couple of wine shops. Managed to resist the temptation to buy anything for the moment (the bike shop was easy - it was closed)!

It was a glorious day in Santiago. Brilliant blue sky, no clouds, no significant wind (gentle breeze at best). When I arrived, the temperature was cool enough in the shade to feel sharp on my face and for my breath to condense as I exhaled. Once I stood in the sun waiting for the taxi, the warmth of the sun on my skin was blissful. The sort of day where everyone is dressed up in their winter coats, scarves etc. For anyone who has been in Melbourne at around 10AM on one of those clear and sunny mornings winter mornings, sun low in the sky, deciduous trees have lost nearly all of their leaves, the freshness of the air after fairly recent rain, you'll know EXACTLY what I mean. Maximum temp somewhere around 18 degrees C. Bliss.

Since I was here for my 'preview' visit about 6 weeks ago, snow has commenced falling on the hills/mountains to the east of Santiago, leaving a brilliant white crust on the top, with rocks (Andesites, surprisingly enough) poking through in many places. The contrast with the blue sky is just fabulous. It also means it is possible to finally see where some of the ski runs are - in clear view of the city. The locals have frequently mentioned that the ski fields are right on the outskirts of town, but they are hard to see without the snow. Weekends on the piste look like an option!

Early start in the morning, with a 7AM flight to Copiapo, where the real adventure begins...
